The Jazz Age Lawn Party, this year in its 13th anniversary, is New York’s original prohibition-era inspired party hosted by Michael Arenella. The event began in 2005 as a small gathering and has since grown into one of New York City’s most beloved events. This jazz party attracts thousands of time travelers each year, who come together to discover the music and zeitgeist of the 1920s. It offers a unique and interactive opportunity to relive one of the most colorful and formative epochs in American history.

Micheal Arenalla is a musician and bandleader of NYC’s famous jazz band, the Dream Land Orchestra. His love of jazz music and jazz age culture inspired him to throw the first Jazz Age Lawn Party in 2005. “It really began with a small gathering with good friends, about 50 of us. All of us love jazz music, dance and the fashions of the prohibition era. Afterwards, more people started seeing what we were doing and came. Year after year, it just grew from 50 people to 5,000 people a day!” said Arenella.

For Michael, the Jazz Age never really ended, it just fell asleep. He reawakened it on Governor’s Island with his live jazz band, dancing performances by the Dreamland Follies and the Canarsie Wobblers, summer inspired craft cocktails and exhibitions of vintage clothing, photography and cars. “The music is the key factor of the event. We are going to bring you the authentic music of the 1920’s with 11 pieces of music, and musicians playing original transcriptions that I transcribed  from old recordings.  If youmissed the chance in June, be sure to come visit us in August!”

The Jazz Age Lawn party will take place again on this August 25th and 26th at Governor’s Island. For more information, please visit their website at www.jazzagelawnparty.com
