A major event in the entertainment world, the annual Miss NY Chinese Beauty Pageant, held its final competition at Mohegan Sun Arena on Sunday, August 18th at 1:00 am.  Fourteen finalists performed, showcasing their grace, talent, poise and beauty during this remarkable evening.

To mark this special evening, the finale at Mohegan Sun feature popular actress Bernice Liu from Hong Kong.  Ms. Liu has starred in numerous popular television dramas and big screen movies, and has received several awards from TVB.  She was joined by special guest and emcee Ms. Silvia Yan.  Ms. Yan is also an actress who started her career in broadcasting.  She then became more popular in several television dramas.  Together, these two stars witnessed the crowning of a beautiful and talented contestant that night at Mohegan Sun, in front of an audience of over 3,000 fans.

The panel of seven distinguished judges included Ms. Bethany Seidel, VP of Marketing and Promotions at Mohegan Sun, Mr. Robert So, director of Cathay Jewelry Group, Asian-American actor Derek Ting, Ms. Cindy Mak, the principle of Melko Inc., Ms. Vivian Keung, director of Sales at TVB USA, and actress, fashion designer and film director Ms. Ma Ling.

This glamorous event is produced by the Miss NY Chinese Beauty Pageant Committee, under the direction of Executive Director Mr. Jason Kong and Event Chairman Mr. William Yep, and co-produced by TVB (USA) Inc., with Mohegan Sun as the primary sponsor.  Pageant Beauty Consultant Ms Everlyn Ho, owner of Le Peau Day Spa, this year once again made fourteen young women look absolutely stunning on the stage.

This year marked the 12th anniversary of the Miss NY Chinese Beauty Pageant.  The Pageant was an evening filled with music, dance, singing, swimsuits, evening gowns, and a very interesting Q & A.  All this, and more, helped build the excitement in the room as the time grew closer to announce the winner.  Before the big announcement, the audience was treated to a video presentation that showed what the past few months have looked like as these women began their journey to tonight’s finale.  We watched and shared in the joys, the smiles, the tears, and the laughter as the contestants clearly became a close- knit group of not only competitors, but also each other’s friend.  Emotions were running high not only for the finalists, but now also for those of us in the audience. During the final competition, VIP audience members may also vote to select the “Most Popular Contestant,” which brought even more excitement to the evening.

And then it came, the moment of climax we had all been waiting for.  Announced first, was second runner-up,  Ms. Michelle Yang.  Then first runner-up, Ms. Michelle Kaszuba, who, because of her great smile and her jazz and tap dance performance, also winning the titles “Miss Photogenic” and “Miss Talent” in the competition.  Then, with screams and shouts, and a thunderous applause Ms. Maggie Zhang was announced the winner of the 2013 Miss NY Chinese Beauty Pageant, and was crowned by Mohegan Sun CEO Mr. Soper.  Ms. Zhang, 21 years old, was born in Sydney, Australia.  She was raised by her grandparents, studied in Shanghai, and came to the United States when she was 15.  She is now in her third year of college, with a major in Economics and Sociology.  In the future, Ms. Zhang hopes to become a dancer and pursue a career in modeling.  Along with this distinguished recognition, Ms. Zhang received the grand prize along with a diamond pendant from the president of Laihing Jewelry, and will represent New York in the Miss Chinese International Pageant held in Hong Kong in 2014.   In addition, Miss Zhang will have the exciting opportunity  to be selected for Hairun Media Company’s acting roles in a TVB drama series.

Miss NY Chinese Beauty Pageant is a beauty pageant that selects New York City’s representative to the Miss Chinese International Beauty Pageant held in Hong Kong each year. Many winners have gone on to pursue a successful entertainment career,  most notably Ms. Michelle Ye and Ms. Fala Chen.

The Miss NY Chinese Beauty Pageant is one of the largest in scale, fairest, and most influential beauty pageants on the East Coast.  Since the inception of the event, the organizing committee has been dedicated to promoting the minority cultural heritage, international cultural awareness, and Community Significance. This event provide the outstanding Young American Chinese, “The Stars of Tomorrow”, with the rare opportunity to show their virtues with cultural pride, leadership, family values, and confidence to succeed in a culture-blended society.  This year’s pageant arranged a number of exciting activities.  This included a “history tour” to visit the Empire State Building, where the 14 contestants met with the judges and were able to enjoy the striking panoramic views of New York City fro atop this world-famous landmark.

The 2013 Miss N.Y. Chinese Beauty Pageant Talent Show was held on August 2, 2013 at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel in Flushing.  Here, the final 14 contestants spent the night demonstrating their talents, which varied from dancing, painting, singing, drawing and entertaining the crowd of over 200 people.
