“2017 NYC’s Five Boro Bike Tour: Deputy Director Chen Led More Than 10 Taiwan Tourism Ambassadors Through New York City’s Five Boroughs to Promote Travel to Taiwan”by Sophia Hsu
TD’s Five Boro Bike Tour, which has attracted more than 32,000 worldwide bike enthusiasts every year, took place on Sunday, May 7, 2017. Chen Fengyu, Deputy Director of Economic and Cultural Office of Taipei in New York, led 10 Taiwan Tourism ambassadors, taking part in the nation’s largest bike charity events. While wearing a t-shirt promoting Taiwan Tourism alongside more than 30,000 riders, the ambassadors rode for approximately 40 miles from Lower Manhattan all the way through the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and while facing strong headwinds crossing the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, ended the tour in Staten Island.
Deputy Director Chen lauded, “The New York City 5 Boro Bike Tour is one of the nation’s largest charitable events educating children and youths on how to correctly and safely navigate the City by bicycle. This year’s event marks its 40th anniversary, making it even more meaningful. Sunday was the first time that the Taiwan Tourism Bureau organized tourism ambassadors to participate in the event, hoping to meaningfully support the charitable activity while also promoting travel in Taiwan to every corner of New York City.
Chen also mentioned, “Taiwan is known as the ‘Bicycle Kingdom’ because of its high-end bicycle manufacturing.” In recent years, the government has enthusiastically promoted the construction of cycling tour routes, building Taiwan into “A Bicycle Tour Paradise”. CNN’s travel site CNNGO selected Sun Moon Lake Road as one of the world’s top ten most beautiful bike routes. The famous Lonely Planet travel guide selected Taitung in 2016 as one of Asia’s top 10 tourist attractions because of its accessibility by bike with gorgeous views of the Pacific coastline and magnificent, starry sky. Whether you love to challenge yourself or simply love leisurely roaming by bicycle, everyone can find the best-fitting bike tour for them in Taiwan.
Clint Bergstrom, who has worked in Taiwan for three years, loves Taiwan’s natural beauty and culture. Despite having run in a 10k race just the day before, he joined his Taiwanese wife Evena Liao as a Taiwan Tourism ambassador on the bike ride. Bergstrom described much of Taiwan’s geography is breathtaking, especially the bright watercolors of Sun Moon Lake, Kenting’s tropical landscape, and the sheer cliffs and precipitous rock faces of Taroko Gorge. For Bergstrom, Kinmen’s unique history and vistas are unforgettable. “The warmth of the Taiwanese people and Taiwan’s delicious snacks are my reasons for loving Taiwan, and I am delighted to be a ‘tourism ambassador’ to promote travel to Westerners who are not familiar with Taiwan.”
The petite Chen Bairong was another of the Taiwan tourism ambassadors. She has been working in the United States for seven years and has been trying to do something to aid in the growth of Taiwan. “When I heard that the Taiwan Tourism Bureau was one of the groups participating in the NYC 5 Boro Bike Tour, I signed up without hesitation,” she said enthusiastically. “My wish is for New Yorkers to get the chance to know my beloved Taiwan,” Ms. Chen also mentioned that in order to complete the 40-mile race, she had been training many months to prepare herself. She recently ran a half marathon and successfully finished the race.
