The weather could not have been better for the 12th Annual Taiwan Heritage Day at Citifield on Sunday. A day that started with traditional Taiwanese cultural performances on Mets Plaza, and featured former NY Mets pitcher Nelson Figuerora, was a complete hit for everyone in attendance.

To give people an up-close, first hand experience of Taiwanese culture, the Taiwan Tourism Bureau set up on Citi Field Mets Plaza stalls offering snacks from Taiwan, Tong Wan (a traditional Taiwanese game for kids), free souvenirs, and lots of fun for all the Mets fans. In addition, the stage area was organized by the Taiwan Afar Pure Youth Choir, who performed a series of Taiwanese folk songs, contributing both a musical and cultural tradition to the days festivities. The stadium was also hosting “Metropolitan Family Day” (Family Sundays) activities, so there were many other on-site activities and fun happening for everyone’s enjoyment.

Tourism Bureau chief, Thomas Chang, director of the New York Office, said: “We all know that Taiwan is a very suitable place for families. This year we specifically chose the Taiwan Heritage Day in coincide with the Mets’ Family Day, mainly because of the large proportion of families where everyone is a Mets fan. It’s a great opportunity to have more people know about the activities of Taiwan, and to choose Taiwan as a travel destination in the near future.

After the fun on Mets Plaza, the fun and excitement continued as we proceeded into Citifield and onto the playing field for more photos, the national anthem, and a ceremonial first pitch by Figuerora just before the Mets took to the field.

Currently a baseball analyst for SportsNet NY (SNY), Figuerora was right at home mingling with fans, the press, and posing for pictures with Mr. Met and Taiwan’s official mascot, Oh Bear! A special treat for everyone, was the short video that played on the jumbotron showcasing all the reasons to visit Taiwan. In recognition of his time spent, and subsequent reporting on his experience traveling to Taiwan, Figuerora was presented with a Distinguished Service Award from the New York Taiwan Tourism Bureau.

The day’s events ended with a brief press conference where Figuerora unequivocally stated his Taiwan experience was one he is looking forward to repeating sometime in the future.

As for the game…the Phillies beat the Mets 5 to 1.
