Ask The Expert: 2011 Fall Fashion Trends

By Loren Chaffee

Our resident all-things-beauty expert Everlyn Ho, artistic director of La Peau Day Spa and 2009 and 2010 winner of City Search’s “Best Makeup Artist” award, has been busy working with the 2011 Miss NY Chinese beauty pageant finalists to get them ready for the pageant finale at the Mohegan Sun Casino & Resort. The few minutes I got to chat with her, she was able to impart some wisdom on the latest fall makeup trends to match your fabulous fall wardrobe.

Cinched Waists + Neon Lips: This autumn, a more feminine line with a cinched waist and flouncy skirt is in the forecast. Pair this shapely look with bright, eye-popping neon lips. Hot pink is the top choice this season. Low Décolletages + High-Arched Eyebrows: As necklines take the plunge, eyebrows are bolder and reaching towards the sky. Compliment that low neckline with a choker – that’s right, they ARE back – to tie your low décolletage and your high-arched eyebrows together.

Long Skirts + Cozy Sweaters + Natural Looks: As necklines plunge, so are the hemlines this fall. Long, flowing skirts and chunky sweaters hit the runways to make this autumn the most comfortable and comforting yet. This easy elegance can be complimented by natural, earthy hues in your makeup palette.

Polka Dots + Bold Eyeliner: Pin dots are classic, but polka dots are bold! Match the boldness of your cutest polka dot dress with a strong, crisp line above your lashes. The sweet look of a natural, earthy makeup palette contrasted by the bold, heavy eyeliner is sure to wow.

Granny Plaids + Bright Colors: Time to raid your grandparents’ storage unit for their vintage plaid. These high contrast plaids go well with the mustard, rust, and jade green seen all over the catwalks this season. Take the bold lash line to a new level with brightly- hued mascaras and eyeliner.

Transitioning Day to Evening Looks? Keep your working girl dress on with the heavy eyeliner’s crisp edge and pair them with a nude, shiny gloss for day wear. Transition your day look to the evening by reaching for your day-glo shade of pink lipstick or gloss, and pull on your cutest peplum blazer. What do I mean by peplum, you ask? Well, peplum refers to a style of jacket, dress, short coat, or blazer that is cinched at the waist with a full, flouncy skirt. The shades for this autumn are jade green, mustard yellow hues, and neon accents.
