When you’ve found blue sky above, and bold, green leafy images on the walls surrounding you, you’ve probably arrived at Thai Select. A cozy restaurant located between 36th and 37th Street on Ninth Avenue in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen. Bringing a touch of the outside on the inside, Thai Select’s atmosphere is equally matched by it’s friendly wait staff.
Even before you peek at the menu, you’ll want to start off with one of Thai Select’s perfectly mixed cocktails. Along with an ample selection of champagnes, beers, and wines, you’ll easily be tempted to taste any one of their 11 Specialty Cocktails. Just in time for some extra Summer fun, they’ve added these 3 special cocktails: Mango and Pomegranite Mojito, a Pomegranite Cosmopolitan, and bartender BeeBee’s very own ‘Snow White’ – a combination of Lychee and rum, with a whisper of confectioner’s sugar coating the rim of the glass.
At Thai Select, your dining experience begins by choosing from 23 different appetizers- including four traditional Thai soups- none of them priced over $10. Appetizer highlights include Pork Poppers, Crab Croquettes, and a Coco Puff Martini. Pork Poppers, or Moo Dad Deaw, are pieces of seasoned pork jerky served with Thai Select’s fire sauce. You won’t be able to resist the Crab Croquettes, crabmeat and premium cream cheese wrapped in wonton skin, lightly fried and served with Thai Select’s ‘special sauce’. It may be just a small bite, but it’s an explosion of flavor! And in your Coco Puff Martini you’ll find hand-battered shrimp delicately spiced with a nice, crunchy coating.
You’ll find six vegetarian dishes to choose from as a main course. Our favorite? The Grilled Tofu Mushroom Medley, made with soft, flavorful grilled tofu steak and portabello mushrooms topped with Select’s teriyaki sauce. Other recommendations include the Spicy Eggplant Basil, Ginger Vegetarian Duck, or the Cashew Nut Tofu.
Thai Select’s Happy Seafood Medley, one of two choices found under the heading “Alternative Thai” is an amazing dish made with spinach fettucine, jumbo shrimp, squid, scallops, and fish filet topped with Select’s teriyaki sauce. And if you like your Thai food served with an extra special sauce, we were pleased to learn that every sauce at Thai Select is unique and hand-mixed at the restaurant. Now that’s something special!
It’s time for dessert, and in this category there are two special Summer offerings that deserve your attention. First, is Thai Select’s Pumpkin Custard, a refreshing cool treat of custard served inside a small carved out pumpkin. And then there’s the Honey Banana served with Green Tea Ice Cream. A sweetly fried banana wrapped in a spring roll and topped with fresh strawberries, green tea ice cream and a sprig of mint. Both are summer dessert specials, so be sure to stop in and get’em while it’s hot!
Thai Select is the largest in the Thai Select group of restaurants, which recently opened it’s newest restaurant, “Reserve”, located on Third Ave. (bet. 28 & 29th Sts.). Joining us throughout our dining experience was Thai Select’s manager, ‘Pop’, who shared with us all the ingredients that went in to each dish at Thai Select that makes them so wonderfully delicious. And Mayor Bloomberg, when you’re finished reading this, Thai Select extends an open invitation to come whenever you’d like to come enjoy some great Thai food!
