Housing Works Thrift Shops

Housing Works Thrift Shops is a unique entrepreneurial venture composed of seven upscale locations in NYC, an online auctions site and a Bookstore Cafe in Soho. All provide funding for the support of homeless men, women and children living with HIV and AIDS in New York City. Stores are clean and attractive, and selections are neatly separated by gender and type (jeans, shirts, dresses, versus accessories) making going up and down the aisles a breeze. This is a boon especially with the present economic climate; thrift stores are seeing more sales and crowds. Although the shops’ selections can be hit or miss, vintage clothes, designer brands, and luxury items run cheap. Shoes and furniture are also available at reasonable prices. Books, records, and handbags overfill the store. Speed is key to shopping at Housing Works. If you see something you like, better snatch it quick before the person behind you makes a leap for it. Like most thrift stores, Housing Works provides tax deduction capability for any quality second-hand stuff dropped off at any of the locations. Housing Works will also pick up furniture for free, a much better alternative than lugging a couch from the fourth floor only to leave it on the sidewalk. Volunteers are always welcome at Housing Works to staff the stores.
