Mashell Goodluck/New York Fashion Week

By Jason Jaskot

The soundtrack for Mashell Goodluck’s New York Fashion Week show at White Space included David Bowie’s “Space Oddity,” and you would be hard pressed to find a more fitting pairing of song with clothing at anywhere else. This show was an aesthetic space oddity and then some; the press release says he was influenced by outer space and the deep ocean, but it’s the outer space motive that shined through the most. “Enter At Your Own Risk” said the belly shirt on one of the models, and the risk here is creative; but shear away some of the outlandish ruffles and puffy silver accents and other outrageous touches, and you’d have a collection of fully accessible streetwear.

The color palette, or lack thereof, was almost all white, there was some silver, and two or three yellow pieces which stood out shockingly, but nearly everything else was bright, crisp white. The most obvious nods to the space theme were a ruffled bodysuit and a dress with silver spikes and a head covering; however overall it’s the functional pieces, like the men’s overcoat or the smart yellow suit(with white heals) that make the collection. Footwear from Lugz and goodie bags from Shea Moisture completed the vision and added to the story.  At the end of the day it’s great to see a designer have a vision and stick with it, and Mashell Goodluck certainly did. @Mashell.Goodluck on IG for more.
