McDonald’s Flavors of Summer 2012: Limited Time Taste Innovation

By Sanique Lim

Inspired by the native seasonal fruits of North America, McDonald’s introduce its innovative menu of this year’s summer with the favorite fruit of Americans, berries! Starting this May, McDonald’s promised to strike the American’s summer with its new menu of fresh seasonal fruits: McCafe Cherry Berry Chiller and Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal, assuring this summer is filled with berries chilling and healthy choice of meal! Few years ago, most people perceived fast food restaurants do not emphasize on nutrition facts and healthy diet, putting blame on fast food restaurant for people’s health issues and obesity, especially the Asian “tiger mom”, sadly which my mom is one of the crew. However, it isn’t true anymore in the this decade; McDonald’s is striving to lead the fast food industry with health concerned diets, promising every of their customers has benefited from its wholesome nutrition on every meal, meantime satisfy with the delicious meals.

With the innovative inspiration of native fruits of North America, blueberry, McDonald’s proudly presents its new Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal with its promising nutrition and “berry” (very) delicious combination of fresh, juicy blueberries; a tasty hint of real banana; crunchy, premium walnuts and the natural oatmeal. Though it is somewhat embarrassing to disclose this secret, I actually ate 3 servings of Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal during the First Taste Event. Amazed with the taste combination of Blueberry and Banana, I was trying calmed my excitement in the crowd, while in fact if I was hanging out with my friends usually, it would not be surprised to see someone grabbing his friend’s food in the restaurant.

McDonald’s Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal has 290 calories per serving, two serving of whole grain (32 grams of whole grain) and offers about one quarter cup of blueberries. Blueberries have a diverse range of micronutrients, with notably high levels of the essential dietary mineral manganese, vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin K, and dietary fiber. Meanwhile blueberries contain nutrients and phytochemicals, which possibly have a role in reducing risks of some diseases, including inflammation and certain cancers.

The new Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal will be available all day at participating McDonald’s restaurant through August 3 (while supplies last), for suggested retail price of $2.49, offering the best choice of flavorful summertime for on-to-go customers. Furthermore, I believe there will be a to-do-list in everyone’s mind as talking about summer; as in mine, there are always sunglasses, surf boards, stealing my friends’ food from their plates and the expensive electric bills because of AC; however after the astonishing experience that makes my eyes literally stretched with the icy new McCafe Cherry Berry Chiller on the First Taste Event, May 2; now I am listing a new to-do-task in my list: the perfect summer heat where the McCafe Cherry Berry Chiller meets my taste butts again.

Made with 100% fruit juice with natural flavors, McCafe Cherry Berry Chiller combines the natural sweetness of cherry and blueberry in a refreshing, sippable icy blend. Available all day beginning from May 7 until September 3 (while supplied last) at all participating McDonald’s restaurant nationwide. The new McCafe Cherry Berry Chiller is a convenient and affordable way to “chill” during the summer with its suggested retail prices of $1.69 (small, 12 oz.), $1.99 (medium, 16 oz.) and $2.29 (large 22 oz.). And because I know how a natural blended fruit juice should taste like (thanks to my tiger mom), the McCafe Cherry Berry Chiller tastes like one of the jars of fruit juice in my fridge back home, and the fridge is now in McDonald’s.

Thus, not to say I am about to challenge my tiger mom, but I would love to buy her especially the new Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal, and anticipate for her response, perhaps something like: “son, this is delicious and healthy, where do you get it from?” “Mom, it’s from McDonald’s, its Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeal, my everyday’s breakfast.”
