Miss New York Chinese Beauty Pageant – Day 1 – NYC
By: Erik Teng Photography by Erik Teng
The 2014 New York Chinese Beauty Pageant is underway. 14 beautiful girls from around the globe are vying for the title of Miss Chinese New York. This photographer has the unique opportunity not only to cover the event, but also take an 11-day 10-night media tour around the great state of New York. Take it from this native New Yorker, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel this beautiful state, and I get to do it with 14 of the most beautiful and talented ladies in the world.
This media tour is sponsored by the I Love New York tourism bureau, and they set up what is going to be one of the most memorable experiences of my life. First stop…NYC. Our day began visiting the nycgo.com information booth. We were lucky enough to be given “City Passes”, which basically gave us an all access pass to all the places any one would want to visit while in NYC; the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MOMA), the Museum of Natural History just to name a few.
The Museum of Natural History was an interesting experience. I have not visited here since elementary school. The only other access since then was from the movie “Night at the Museum”, visiting here definitely brought back some fond memories. I had a chance to sit in the Hayden planetarium for the first time in over 20 years and learn everything I forgot as an adolescent. The Big Bang, the millions of galaxies outside our own, super nova, dark matter…What stuck with me, coming out of the planetarium was that no matter how significant we perceive things to be, we are all part of a larger system. Much like the crowning of a 2014 Miss Chinese New York, although there is only 1 winner, these 14 beauties are part a larger purpose and that is to inspire and showcase the beauty of our culture. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the next 10 days.
