The Healing Art of Reiki

(By Joe Meny)

Does the Big Apple stress you out? Are you looking for a different healing proces to address the sometimes daunting challenges that we all face in life? Then read on, as we share with you the traditional Japanese healing art of Reiki, and meet one of its Masters, Wen-Chi Chen
Reiki is a combination of two Japanese words rei, or “miraculous” “transcendental” “sacred”, and ki, or “life force/energy of the universe”. It is a spiritual and healing practice developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui in Japan.
The mission of Usui Reiki Ryoho (Healing Art/Method) is to “enhance mutual well-being for oneself and others, on one hand, by fulfilling a peaceful and joyful life mentally and physically and, on the other hand, healing the sick.” Usui Mikao Sensei (1865-1926)
Reiki healing art is a “laying-on of hands” healing technique that uses the vibrations of love and harmony of a universal life force to heal, by balancing the subtle energies within our bodies. Reiki addresses physical, emotional, mental and spiritual imbalances. This healing art is an effective delivery system. The Reiki practitioner serves as a vessel that supplies healing energies where they are most needed. Reiki energies flow out of the practitioner’s body through the palms of the hands while they are touching the recipient’s body.

Reiki is based on the idea that there is an energy of the universe (or the source) that sustains all lives and supports the body’s innate healing abilities. Practitioners seek to access this energy, allowing it to flow to the body and facilitate healing.
A Reiki healing session is a time when your mind, body and sprit receive the energy of the universe for repairing, building and strengthening. All the while, you are doing nothing more then lying back and enjoying the relaxing energy. Reiki healing sessions are a peaceful healing break from the often hectic pace of life.

According to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey, more than 1.2 million adults had used an energy healing therapy, such as Reiki, in the previous year. The survey also found that approximately 161,000 children had used an energy healing therapy in the previous year.
People use Reiki for relaxation, stress reduction, and symptom relief, in an effort to improve overall health and well-being. Reiki has been used by people with anxiety, chronic pain, HIV/AIDS, and other health conditions, as well as by people recovering from surgery or experiencing side effects from cancer treatments.

Clients may experience a deep state of relaxation during a Reiki session. They might also feel warm, tingly, sleepy, or refreshed.
Reiki appears to be generally safe, and no serious side effects have been reported.
